This bas relief is one of several panels showing Marcus Aurelius on campaign against the barbarians. This panel deals with conquest and clemency. The emperor, dressed in military garb is on horseback. The defeated enemy are on their knees begging for clemency. The two square flags held on poles are vexilla, banners usually made of coarse linen, that represented either legionary or cohort colors. These banners were of great symbolic significance to the soldiers.
