Description

The Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verita, Italian) is located in the vestibule of a medieval church Santa Maria in Cosmedin in a plaza that used to be the Forum Boarium (Cattle Forum) in ancient times. The image probably depicts the titan sea god Oceanus. The purpose of the sculpture may have been used as a drain cover. It may have been used in the Temple of Hercules Victor which is in the Forum Boarium.
