This is one of the Furietti Centaurs, known as Young Centaur, one of a pair of grey-black marble sculptures of centaurs based on Hellenistic models. It is in the Capitoline Museum in Rome. The sculpture, The Young Centaur, along with the Old Centaur, was found at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli in 1736.
The statue bears the signatures of Aristeas and Papias of Aphrodisias, a Greek city in Asia Minor. These Hadrianic copies may be modeled on 2nd century BC Hellenistic bronze originals. The Young Centaur reminds Roman viewer of the soul in love or uplifted in joy.
